Syntax and Semantics of Complex and Ambiguous Wh-questions

چکیده
In this paper, we present a new approach to the syntax and semantics of wh-questions. On the basis of an appropriate type hierarchy whose members model contributions of lexical items to sentence mood, we introduce a head-interrogative schema that licences wh-sentences syntactically and contributes the semantic interrogative operator. This syntactic basis allows the compositional construction of the semantics of multiple wh-questions and the representation of the interaction of universal quantiiers with wh-elements. In addition, an underspeciied representation of the latter case, where systematic scope ambiguities between universal quantiiers and wh-elements are observed, is proposed. As a semantic representation language for this task we use UMRS (Underspeciied Minimal Recursion Semantics), a computable metalanguage that represents structural ambiguities in terms of underspeciication.

Extraction Phenomena in Synchronous TAG Syntax and Semantics
We present a proposal for the structure of noun phrases in Synchronous TreeAdjoining Grammar (STAG) syntax and semantics that permits an elegant and uniform analysis of a variety of phenomena, including quantifier scope and extraction phenomena such as wh-questions with both moved and in-place wh-words, pied-piping, stranding of prepositions, and topicalization. The tight coupling between synta...
متن کاملDecomposing Questions
The primary proposal of this thesis that in questions, a “Q” morpheme must undergo syntactic movement from a clause-internal position to a clause-peripheral position. Throughout this thesis, we develop a syntactic analysis and a semantic formalism for questions that accounts for the facts observed in wh-in-situ languages (focusing mainly on Japanese, Sinhala, Shuri Okinawan, and premodern Japan...
متن کاملAn experimental investigation of interrogative syntax / semantics ∗
Current theories of interrogative syntax/semantics adopt two strategies for the interpretation of in-situ wh-phrases: covert movement and in-situ interpretation. The covert movement strategy is traditionally assumed to be all-or-nothing: the in-situ wh-phrase covertly moves to C or else stays in-situ and is interpreted in its base-generated position at LF. In this paper we argue that neither ap...
متن کاملReverse Engineering of Network Software Binary Codes for Identification of Syntax and Semantics of Protocol Messages
Reverse engineering of network applications especially from the security point of view is of high importance and interest. Many network applications use proprietary protocols which specifications are not publicly available. Reverse engineering of such applications could provide us with vital information to understand their embedded unknown protocols. This could facilitate many tasks including d...
متن کاملWh-Questions\' Expression in Persian-speaking Children: A Comparison Between Spontaneous and Elicited Probes
Objectives: Studies have shown that most children before the age of 5 are capable to comprehend and express wh-questions in daily conversations. This study aimed at comparing the ability of wh-questions’ production in 4- to 6-year-old children in spontaneous and elicited conditions. Methods: In this descriptive-analytic study, 4- to 6-year-old Persian-speaking children (N = 72) were selected r...
